How to Hang a Wreath Without a Hanger

Nothing says 'it’s the most wonderful time of the year' like a beautiful wreath greeting you at the door! But if you've ever struggled with bulky wreath hangers that won’t let your door close properly—or worse, damage the door frame—you’re probably looking for a better solution. Besides, a metal hanger sticking out over the top of a beautiful wreath is exactly the kind of detail that quietly undermines the whole effect, right?

Ribbon is the better solution on every count. Plus, you can pick any ribbon color to match your door or enhance your holiday color scheme. Here’s how you can do it, too!

The Problem with Wreath Hangers

The standard over-the-door metal hanger adds thickness to the top of the door — enough that many doors, especially solid or well-fitted ones, won't close properly. And the repeated pressure of the hanger against the door can leave marks and damage the door and the door frame with every opening and closing of the door.

The ribbon method hangs the wreath from the top of the door itself, inside the frame, which means the door closes exactly as it should. Nothing protrudes. Nothing scratches.

The Ribbon Method

  1. Start with a wide length of ribbon. I’m using a 2.5-inch grosgrain ribbon. (You can go wider but any narrower may not adequately support the weight of your wreath.)

  2. Cut a length of ribbon long enough to loop through both wreaths. (NOTE: This technique assumes that you will be displaying a wreath on the interior and exterior of your door.)

  3. Feed the ribbon through both wreaths.

  4. Secure the ends of the ribbon with a heavy duty safety pin. (I also clipped a large binder clip to the end for extra measure.)

  5. Once secure, lift the looped ribbon from the center-point and drape over the top of your open door.

  6. Adjust as necessary and tuck the clipped end of the ribbon behind your interior or exterior wreath so it is hidden.

The door closes normally, the ribbon is hidden along the top edge, and what's visible from the outside is simply the wreath and whatever length of ribbon you choose to show. The ribbon you use becomes part of the aesthetic. Match it to your door color for a seamless look (like I did here), or choose a contrasting ribbon to make it a festive detail.
