How to Tie Velvet Bows For A Christmas Tree

The Technique

  1. Use 3/8-inch wide velvet ribbon. Cut a 19-inch section per bow.

  2. Fold the length in half.

  3. Make a loop.

  4. Take the longer end and fold it over the loop with the tufted side up.

  5. Flip the end behind the loop.

  6. Pull through to make the second loop with the tufted side out.

  7. Adjust loops as needed.

  8. Insert an ornament hanger behind the bow to attach to your tree.

A Few Notes on Ribbon

Width matters. A narrower ribbon (the ribbon pictured here is 3/8 inch) reads as delicate and refined. A wider ribbon makes a bolder statement. I recommend purchasing a few different widths (and even a few different colors!) to figure out what look you’re trying to achieve.

How many bows you use is a matter of proportion and preference. Aim to buy more ribbon than you need so you don’t run out before you’re finished. Try distributing the bows evenly, clustered, or concentrated in a certain area. This is where you can get creative!
