Kids Room with DIY Built-in Bunk Beds

The Kids Room

BROOKLYN, NY

New York City bedrooms are small. Designing one room for two kids—two beds, shared storage, and the hope for dedicated desks—meant every decision had to work a little harder.

By repurposing our existing beds into a DIY built-in bunk, layering in IKEA storage, and incorporating a salvaged dresser, the room slowly took shape. Painting everything in one unifying color (SW Debonair) tied it together, giving the structure that custom, built-in feel—like it had always been there.

Each child now has their own desk space. One is finished with grasscloth wallpaper and rose-stained fluted shelves; the other is still a work in progress—stay tuned.

This L-shaped configuration in our 10×10 space worked until the kids started homework and needed their own workspace. The challenge was how to fit 2 desks and 2 beds into the same room.
